Shopping 101: 4 Ways to Save on a Designer Wedding Dress

We consulted our friends in the fashion world for tips on how to shave off a little bit of the cost while still keeping style high.
Photo: Clark Jones

Lose the TrimmingsChoosing a classic gown without embellishments may lower the price tag significantly (often by up to 25%). Alternatively, opt out of some of the ornamentation. Get all that gorgeous lace and beading on the bodice, but eliminate the lace and embelishment on the hemline, waistline, train, or sleeves to save.
Avoid Custom AlterationsMaking special changes to couture gowns, such as changing the shape of the neckline or altering a sleeve, can cost up to $300 per adjustment.
buyer beware
There are plenty of wedding-related purchases you'll want to make online, but your wedding gown isn't one of them. Trust us, we've heard all the horror stories. Online retailers go out of business regularly and leave brides high and dry. Even the biggest ones disappear (like DBS which went of business in July 2005) leaving brides without gowns close to their wedding date, scrambling for something to wear down the aisle. Additionally, gowns from online retailers are often designer knockoffs (not the real things they claim to be) and once you've bought one, you're stuck with no recourse for exchange or return.
Go SimpleKeep your budget balanced by choosing a simple silhouette. The more fabric it takes to make a gown, the more it costs. A ball gown made with yards and yards of taffeta or organza can cost more than twice as much as a sheath in the same fabric.
Shop Sample SalesWinter and summer are two times a year when you can luck out and get great savings at a bridal shop sample sale. At these events, buyers attempt to get rid of inventory and may cut prices by as much as 80%. You'll need to factor in dry cleaning and alteration costs though, since these gowns (used as try-on models) are usually sold "as-is". Also, women who fit into a size 8 gown will have the best luck as most samples are made around that size.

A Twist on traditional bouquets

Well ...I do love bouquets for bridesmaids I have found something that is so edgy even you our readers might like. Wrist Bands with beautiful ribbons on it instead of a bouquet. Almost make it as a fashion accessory. Make it an elegant wrist corsage with a fancy/unique flower. This can be worn all night long since it will leave your hands free to eat, have fun, and of course dance that night away. You and your bridesmaids will appreciate that change. *Remember that a wrist corsage takes a lot of beating so you need to chose a flower that is durable. Just as a peony, ranunculus, gardenias, or orchids.

BayLaurel Event was so successful

It was a beautiful day out at BayLaurel in Micanopy. I was thrilled with each of the vendors who participated in making it so successful. We had a drop dead goregous tent with fabric covers, lighting, PowerPoint, bars, lounge seating, small tents for cocktail tables, entrance tents and more. Party Time Rentals went beyond what we asked for to make this one of the best! It was a pleasure to work with the owners, Jaclyn, Roxann, Adia, Ellen and Kristy.

Then we had music flowing from Gosia & Ali and Eric Redmond. They did opposite sets so each other could have breaks. We were so blessed to have both groups perform for us. It was such a neat site to have piano for sometime and then, guitar and flute. I wish you all could have been there.

I can't say, 'thank you' enough to Celebrations for their dedication to making all the wonderful food for us. We had mini burgers, sweet potatoes, fried grouper, fried mushrooms and some yummy sandwiches. They brought they great sangeria too. WOW!!! This is so good. You have to have this at your next event. If not you will be missing it even if you haven't tried it...

To top off the food we had sweet ends by Ms. Debbie Sugar Art and Posh Pastry. They made some homemade goodies and some fun pretzels. OMYGOSH!!! So didn't need to try all of that but they were sure good.

Certainly not least we have multiple florist bring flowers to sponsors tables. From Pranges, The Plant Shoppe, Unforgettable Events and Crevassee Regency. We had arrangements for cocktail tables, guest tables whether they were square or round, plus the food tables.

So if you are looking for a venue that will allow you to stretch your imagination then BayLaurel might be the one. Call us at A`vie and we will set up a time for you to see the venue.

Cheesecake Lollipops

Hot After Party

I just love it when our brides and grooms want to have an After Party. I know it is more for their dear friends but occassionally we get the mom's and dad's to join in. I can't wait to post the two that we have planned for May. They are having small bands in a small bar with their dear friends. This will be announced at the end of the reception. You can do the same at your wedding reception. At the end of the reception you invite your guests to the After Party. If you want it to be limited then give them a private invitation before the wedding so they can plan ahead. Plus make sure that they know that this is a private invitation. You don't want any CRASHERS...

Programs...to have one or not

Programs can be beautiful, simple, elegant, personalized, and unique and a keepsake. They are not necessary and are TOTALLY optional. Although I feel like they can be a welcoming to your guest though as they arrive to the ceremony. If you are having a Intercultural wedding you really need to consider this as an option. This allows your guest to really be a part of it. Along with they get a history of who you are. As your guests are coming from near and far you can give them a keepsake to take home. You will also note that they don’t always know both sides.

A program can give some information about:
· Bride and Groom
· How the bride and groom met
· Wedding Party information on how the bride and groom know them
· Officiant and how they know them and picked them
· Readers
· Musicians
· Explanation of parts of ceremony
· Tribute/Honor to those who have deceased
· Thank you’s

There are more types of programs than you can image. Here are few that we were able to show you that we pulled off of the knot.com
· Booklet
· Fan
· Single

Top 10 Wedding Gown Tends from the knot.com

Why duplicate when theknot.com gives us so much great information. I love it when I come across some new trends or composites that are great to share. I hope you enjoy what they have come up with. I have add my own pictures from other online resources to give you ideas of the dresses.
1. Tiers-Whether it's a ball gown or an A-line, tiers of tulle and soft lace offered volume and texture to this season's gowns.

2. Short Hemlines-This season, just about every designer sent a short dress down the runway. If you've got great gams -- and want to show them off on your wedding day -- embrace the newest high-hemline styles.

3. High Necklines-Bridal designers must have had Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn on the brain when creating their collections, seen in dresses with high necklines that are loaded with playful sophistication.
4. Sheer Overlays-Channel your inner goddess on your wedding day with a flowing overlay. From organza overskirts to layers of soft tulle, designers sent light-as-air creations down the runway.
5. Crumb-Catcher Bodices To really stand out from the rest, choose a strapless dress with this origami-like treatment on the bodice, which is great for framing the face.
6. Embellished Belts Dresses with sashes are everywhere, but to really define your waist and add a little sparkle, try an embellished belt.
7. One-Shoulder Gowns-The asymmetrical neckline made a comeback this season -- perfect for making an undeniably chic statement.

8. Dropped Waists -Nothing elongates the torso like a gown with a dropped waist, and designers made this a prominent style fixture on the bridal runways.
9. Trend: Twisted Fabrics-From straps to waistlines, bridal designers added interest to simple dresses with twists of fabric, proving that just a little detail can make a big statement.
10. Trumpet Skirts Dresses that hug the body in all the right places graced the runways, with big, flared skirts and beautiful, flowing fabrics.

So ladies this doesn't give you permission to drag everyone in your wedding party to try on dresses from now until the wedding day. You do have to make a decision sooner rather than later.
Be trendy but be unique. You are only you.
Happy Planning.

Getting a deal the old fashioned way!

Have you have hit the budget for your wedding? Instead of trying to save even more or beg mom and dad, try bartering! The old act of goods or services directly exchanged for other goods and/or services, without the use of money is back! Wedding experts now say the stigma is gone and bartering is in. According to “Modern Bride Magazine”, there are 6 things to remember when bartering.
1. Make sure your trade is fair. Put a dollar amount to it!
2. Get referrals. Are they professional and reliable?
3. Meet in person. Make sure you can trust them.
4. Sign a contract. This is a must!
5. Pay your taxes. Report the fair market value.
6. Avoid peak wedding periods. It will weaken your ability to barter.

Blowout Wedding on a Budget

What about thinking about doing something really super fun with everything 'Bubbly'. You could have your ceremony start at 8pm and have it under the stars outside with some fun big bubble lights. Then as you guests walk from your ceremony they could go through clouds of bubbles that bring them into a room that is covered with stars too.

Your colors can be bold such as ruby red, silver, gold, midnight blue, dark teal. Make things come to life by doing it 3-D. Hang things with clear fishing line. Hang them at different levels too. Your centerpieces should be luminate along with having the bubble ball gels in the vases. You can also have round small candles on each of the tables.

Then as we move on to the food and drinks. I would have suggest that you have servers butler pass champagne, prosecco and sparkling water. As for so delicious appetizers you can do crab cake bites, medallions of beef tenderloin, tartlets, caviar (If you like it.). For the finale you could dessert favorites verses doing a Wedding cake. This would allow you to meet everyone's taste buds.

Is wedding planning a woman thing?

Maybe your fiancé isn’t too thrilled about wedding planning. Remember these points before you get upset:
1. If you got engaged traditionally (your fiancee asked your parents’ permission), he has done a lot of work already! He gathered the courage to ask your parents’ permission, perhaps choose the ring completely on his own and developed his plan for the proposal. Maybe he feels like he has done his part and the rest is for you to plan.
2. If you assume your fiancee doesn’t want to contribute to the planning, you may do it all on your own. Would you end up resenting him for this, even though you didn’t give him the chance to get involved? Try letting him get involved in the parts that interest and excite him.
3. Check in with each other regularly! Remember what you both discussed as your dream wedding day and don’t lose sight of it throughout the process.

Other Rustic Ideas

When you start to put your wedding together you really need to think about the details. See what I have pulled together to inspire you more on some rustic ideas. It is a fascination with me right now. I hope you don't get to tired of me talking about this type of wedding.

Place cards hanging from Old Wooden Ladders even with the additional vintage tea cups.
Love the chandeliers even with the chains covered. You can use other fabrics or feathers to cover the chains. Chandeliers can be from an antique store and then rewired or painted again to be used for your reception. You can have one, three or tons of them.

Love this with the leaves and layered number cards. See the raffia...

Another cool touch for the bar...

Finally for the main entrance for your guests you can tell them the menu as they walk in...even do a personal greeting if you wish.
Happy searching as you are looking for ideas.

Sacrifice beauty for comfort?

After the traditional dances and cutting of the cake, many brides are changing out of their wedding gowns and into something more comfortable. In a big heavy wedding gown, it can be hard to walk, let alone dance. From changing into a white version of their bridesmaid dresses to changing into blue jeans and tank tops, brides and their wedding party are making a statement about being comfortable and looking great at the same time.

Try having the wedding party pair blue jeans with a tank top the color of their bridesmaid dresses, and the groomsmen change into black button down shirts and blue jeans, while the bride and groom wear blue jeans and white shirts. To dress up this super casual blue jean look, try an elegant Swarovski crystal necklace in your wedding colors, or in white for the bride.

Who says being beautiful has to be painful? Brides don’t be afraid to kick off those high-heels and get into something more comfortable- make this a night to remember and dance the night away!
